Buenaventura Golf Course to get New Fairway
Did You Know?

This past summer the City of Ventura refinanced bonds used to upgrade Olivas Links and the Buenaventura Golf Course and thereby made approximately $800,000 available for the City of Ventura’s Golf Courses. As a member of the City’s Golf Advisory Committee, I proposed our Board’s recommendation to finish the cart paths on all the fairways and replant the fairways to improve the Buenaventura Golf Course.

The Golf Advisory Committee made a concerted effort to determine what golfers in the City wanted for our two Courses. It conducted a survey of about 100 active golfers (via email) and a peer review meeting, inviting members of all clubs from each course. The results of these efforts were clear: improved fairways at Buena was the number one choice. Some of you may have thought that a Clubhouse at Olivas would have been the number one choice, but given the amount of money available, the fairway improvements won out.

So in addition to the Buena improvements, Olivas Links is going to get an improved all weather driving range and permanent electricity to the course. It turns out Olivas is still on a temporary power basis.

The best known schedule will be to do the work at Buena Spring 2012 so that the Sea Isle Paspalm fairways are grown in by Summer 2012. Sea Isle Paspalm grass is a salt tolerant grass that will grow using reclaimed water. This is the same grass that is on the fairways at Olivas. The cart paths will be done first and then they will sod the fairways one at a time, so as to not interrupt play.

I don’t have the schedule for Olivas although I would expect it to be done in the Fall 2012.
